Dialysis is a medical treatment used to perform the functions of the kidneys when they are no longer able to do so effectively. It is typically required for people with kidney failure, a condition where the kidneys can no longer filter waste, excess fluid, and toxins from the blood. Dialysis helps maintain a balance of fluids, electrolytes, and waste products in the body.
There are two main types of dialysis:
Hemodialysis: In this procedure, blood is drawn out of the body and filtered through a machine called a dialyzer, which acts as an artificial kidney. The cleaned blood is then returned to the body.
Peritoneal Dialysis: This type uses the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) as a natural filter. A special fluid is introduced into the abdominal cavity through a catheter, where it absorbs waste products. The fluid is then drained from the body.
